Finishes, and what they do

Plain sterling is bright and cool, and polishes back whenever it dulls. Oxidised silver is deliberately darkened in the recesses so engraving and texture read sharply — this is a finish, not tarnish, and should not be polished away. Black finish takes that further for a deeper, more dramatic effect. Gold-polished sterling gives you a warm gold tone over a silver body, which is the practical way to wear gold-look earrings daily without plating wearing through to brass.

The stones and pearls

Care

Wipe with a soft silver cloth when brightness dulls. Do not polish oxidised or black-finish pieces, since the darkness is the design. Avoid liquid dips on anything with stones, pearls or gold polish. Real pearls in particular are porous — keep them away from perfume, and put earrings on last.

Store in a closed pouch away from air, and remove before swimming; chlorine attacks silver directly.
